We start by reading how water moves across your lot, then build the hardscape and beds to work with it.

A typical project with us can include:

Our Process, From Walkthrough to Final Cleanup

We keep it straightforward and honest. You'll talk to the same family crew from the first walkthrough to the last wheelbarrow load.

1. On-site walkthrough. We come out, look at your slope, soil, and drainage, and listen to what's bugging you — the bed that won't hold mulch, the bank that's washing out, the corner that stays soggy. You get straight answers, not a sales pitch.

2. Clear plan and quote. We lay out exactly what we'll do, what materials we're using, and what it costs. If something isn't worth your money, we'll tell you.

3. Layout and prep. We mark bed lines and wall runs, locate utilities before we dig, and strip sod and old material so we're building on a clean base — not burying problems.

4. Build. Walls go in over a compacted gravel base with proper drainage behind them. Beds get edged, prepped, and amended where the clay is too tight for roots. Plants go in at the right depth, not jammed into a too-small hole.

5. Mulch, cleanup, and walkthrough. We mulch to a clean depth, blow off and haul away every scrap, and walk the finished job with you so you know how to water and care for what we planted.

Materials, Equipment, and Options

The right material in the wrong spot fails fast, so we match what we install to your site and your budget.

Retaining walls. For most residential walls we use segmental concrete block. The wall is only as good as what's under and behind it, so we set a compacted, leveled gravel base below grade, backfill with clean drainage stone, and run a perforated drain pipe so water has somewhere to go instead of pushing the wall over. On taller walls we add geogrid — layers of structural mesh tied back into the hillside between courses — to lock the wall and the soil together. Natural fieldstone and boulder walls are also an option where you want that established Blue Ridge look.

Edging. Natural spade-cut edges are clean and inexpensive and easy to refresh; steel or stone edging holds a crisper line for years if you want lower maintenance.

Mulch and beds. We typically use double-shredded hardwood mulch at a 2–3 inch depth — deep enough to hold moisture and choke weeds, not so deep it smothers roots. Where the native clay is too dense, we work in compost or topsoil so new plants actually establish.

Plants. We're in USDA Zone 7a up here, and we choose accordingly — hardy shrubs, native and adapted perennials, and trees that can take our winters, summer heat, and clay. We'd rather plant something that thrives than something flashy that's dead by next July.

• Water pooling near the house or running across the driveway after rain — a grading and drainage issue that only gets worse.
• A retaining wall that's leaning, bulging, or has gaps opening between blocks — usually a drainage or base failure that needs to be addressed before it lets go.
• A bank or slope that's washing out, losing mulch or soil every storm, and creeping toward something you care about.
• Beds that have lost their edges, with grass invading and mulch gone thin and faded.
• Bare, muddy, or eroding spots where nothing will grow and water keeps cutting a path.
• Overgrown or dead plantings crowding the house, blocking windows, or just making the place look tired.
